UV Lights

Advantages of Ultraviolet Lights

UV lights installed in a central HVAC system are proven to provide better Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), reduce maintenance on equipment, and to extend the lifecycle

of your Residential and/or Commercial HVAC system.

Better Indoor Air Quality

According to the EPA indoor air pollution is often five times worse than outdoor and represents a significant health risk. UV-C improves indoor air quality by sterilizing mold, bacteria, viruses, and allergens from the air as it cycles through the central air system.

Reduce Maintenance on HVAC Equipment

UV is used to keep HVAC systems free of dirt and mold accumulations. Keeping those coils clean means that each unit is operating as efficiently as possible. A thin growth of bio-film on coil surfaces has been proven in lab tests to reduce the free area of heat transfer and increase air velocity up to nine percent. Cleaner coils can also deliver an impressive 30 percent or more increase in cooling capacity when compared to dirty coils.

Extending the lifecycles of HVAC units.

UV lights keep the coils cleaner, which means there is less corrosion and as a result, less unexpected breakdowns. Having cleaner coils may help prevent refrigerant leaks that are costly to repair and may shorten the lifecycle of an outdoor heat pump or air conditioner

How Ultraviolet Lights (UV) Work

Ultraviolet light in the range of 254 NM(UV-C) band has a devastating effect on microbial life, it disrupts the DNA of these organisms which stop them from reproducing and spreading.

UV light disinfection is now widely used in hospitals and laboratories to sanitize instruments and work surfaces and to prevent the spread of potentially lethal airborne infectious diseases. The technology is used by the food industry to sterilize food before packaging and water treatment systems large and small now incorporate UV light as a chemical-free means of purification.

Because the frequency of UV-C light is filtered out by the Earth’s atmosphere microorganisms have no defense against it. It works by scrambling their DNA, which prevents them from reproducing.

According to the EPA indoor air pollution is often five times worse than outdoor and represents a significant health risk. UV-C improves indoor air quality by sterilizing mold, bacteria, viruses, and allergens from the air as it cycles through the central air system.

In the past, UV light has been shown to be effective against influenza strains (including ‘bird’ flu andH1N1 ‘swine’ flu) as well as SARS, legionella, TB, pneumonia, German measles, and many other airborne infectious diseases.Call us today or schedule an appointment with an advisor, to learn which IAQ options are best for you.

Did you know?

  • 50% of all illnesses are caused or aggravated by poor indoor air quality according to The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. A study cited by Kimberly-Clark Corporation found that for every 10 workers, poor indoor air quality caused an additional 6 sick days per year.
  • The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) states poor indoor air quality can cost businesses up to $168 billion annually. Medical care and absenteeism contribute significantly to those costs.
  • Employers can increase workforce performance by roughly 10 % by implementing indoor air quality solutions – DOE.
  • By controlling contaminants such as dust mites, asthma cases can be reduced by 55 to 60% – The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Comfort

Homes and businesses can greatly benefit from the use of a HVAC system installed with an ultraviolet (UV) light. Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) can greatly be improved with the use of a UV light that can eliminate contaminants such as, mold, fungi, viruses, bacteria, and odors. Properly installed, UV systems have been tested and achieve up to a *99.999% reduction on microorganisms. UV disinfection systems for room, surface & HVAC are an ideal proactive measure to complement filtration. Microorganisms, particularly viruses, are so small that filters are mostly ineffective. The UV systems have also been shown to reduce problematic molds and pathogens that are found within the HVAC system and drain pan that would otherwise be introduced and distributed throughout the envelope of the building. iWave is an air purifying device that installs in any duct air conditioning system. When air passes over the iWave, ions produced by the device reduce pathogens, allergens, particles, smoke and odors in the air, creating a healthy environment without producing any harmful by products.

When the ions come in contact with viruses, bacteria or mold, they remove the hydrogen molecules – without them, the pathogens have no source of energy and will die. The ions also attach to allergens like pollen and other particles, causing them to band together until they are large enough to be caught by your ventilation system’s air filter. These devices emits positive and negative ions, creating a plasma region that actively purifies the supply air, killing mold, bacteria and viruses in the coil and living space by 99%.*

We offer the iWave-R, iWave-M, and iWave-C. These offerings, are designed to be set up in most Residential and Commercial HVAC systems including; Gas Furnaces, Oil Furnaces, Air Handlers, Ductless Systems, and light commercial systems up to 12 tons.

New regulations from the Department of Energy

By | Furnaces

Happy New Year Miami Valley!

As we previously mentioned in this blog, The Department of Energy (DOE) has required that all blower fans be transitioned to new more energy efficient models featuring a Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM) that meet the new Fan Energy Rating (FER).  The purpose of these new regulations is to decrease energy consumption.  The new FER standards reduce energy use by up to 46%. For more information on FER regulations visit: https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=EERE-2010-BT-STD-0011-0117

What does that mean for you?

Most of the models we have been offering for the past few years were already in compliance. However, the standard models with old PSC motors will see the biggest change.  The new ECM motors come with more energy saving but higher prices as well for the standard lineup.  That energy savings will reduce carbon pollution by up to 34 million metric tons through the year 2030.

Types of FER Compliant Motors

Variable-Speed Constant Airflow (VCA) ECM Motor.

Offered in our Deluxe and Ultimate Comfort product offerings, these types of motors provide constant airflow, which allows for maximum comfort levels for your home or business. Available in modulating or two-stage heat configurations, which allows for maximum utility savings. They are also the best at humidity control as well.

Variable-Speed Constant Torque (VCT)ECM Motor

Offered in out Improved Comfort product offerings, these types of motors use the control board to control the variable speed motor at various torques. They provide better comfort as they still can move the air constantly. They are offered in single-stage or two-stage heating configurations.

Fixed-Speed Constant Torque (FCT) ECM Motor

Offer in our Standard product offerings, these types of motors have one speed for heating and cooling. The fan is constantly on to provide better comfort than the old PSC motors.

Can we still get an old PSC Motor furnace?

As of this post there are very few left to offer. The changeover is almost complete and we expect that by the end of winter there will no longer be PSC motor furnaces available. PSC motors will still be available as replacement parts for a long time.

Are you ready for Winter?

By | Furnaces, Heating, Humidifiers

Let’s talk about comfort in the fall and winter for the Miami Valley in regards to heat and humidity. According to the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and the Building America (BA) Climate Zones, the Miami Valley sits on the border of Mixed-Humid and Cold BA Zone and the border of 4 and 5 IECC Climate Zone. What does that mean to you? A cold climate is defined as a region with between 5,400 and 9,000 heating degree days (65°F basis). The Building America cold climate corresponds to the IECC climate zones 5 and 6. A mixed-humid climate is defined as a region that receives more than 20 inches (50 cm) of annual precipitation, has approximately 5,400 heating degree days (65°F basis) or fewer, and where the average monthly outdoor temperature drops below 45°F (7°C) during the winter months. The Building America mixed-humid climate zone includes the portions of IECC zones 4 and 3 in category A above the “warm humid” line. In short, we experience high heat and high humidity for a few weeks per summer and extreme cold with low humidity a few weeks per winter.

energy.gov climate regionsHow does that relate to you and how comfortable you are at home or work? The HVAC system in your home or office should be designed to handle your heating and cooling needs at all times of the year, no matter the weather, no matter the season. According to Merriam-Webster, comfort can be defined as “contented well-being, a feeling of relief, and a satisfying or enjoyable experience.” When we refer to comfort in HVAC we refer to Thermal Comfort. Thermal Comfort refers to ASHRAE Standard 55, which establishes the ranges of indoor environmental conditions that are acceptable are about 67°F to 82° and is achieved by accounting for a combination of factors. Those six factors are metabolic rate, clothing insulation, air temperature, radiant temperature, air speed, and humidity. Your HVAC System should be designed by a professional to account for these facts.

In the Miami Valley, we focus more on heating than cooling. Furnaces are sold as single stage, two stage, and modulating variable speed. Last year we talked about those options, click here to view. With modulating, variable speed furnaces the fan is always on. Don’t worry, the fan uses as much electricity as a 100-watt light bulb over the course of a year. By having the fan on the furnace changes its speed and slows down the airflow through the system. This allows for precise temperature control throughout the building and increased comfort as the air is constantly moving. This also allows the HVAC system to do a tremendous job at dehumidification during the cooling season and with a humidifier, better humidification during the heating season. This also means your air is running through the air purification system and removing more dust, allergens, and contaminants.

Modulating variable speed furnaces are also more efficient than single stage and even two stage options. They meet the qualifications for Energy Star and qualify for most utility company rebates. Let’s not forget about other sources of heat as well. Oil furnaces have models available with variable speed blowers that improve the overall comfort while being more energy efficient. Heat Pumps have models available with variable speed and two stage operation, this includes ductless models as well. Boilers have models with modulating gas valves. Electric Furnaces or Fan Coils have options available with variable speed and multi-speed blowers. In short, whatever your home or business heating and cooling needs may be, we have options that will improve your overall comfort.

Which Home Comfort Protection Plan is right for you?

By | Maintenance

Last month we reviewed Why Annual Maintenance on Your Furnace Makes Sense and Saves You Money!  This month we will go over the three Home Comfort Protection Plans we offer; Silver, Gold, and Platinum. At Hauck Bros., Inc. we focus on making sure your HVAC equipment system makes you, your family, or your employees as comfortable as possible while promoting a healthy indoor environment. We also want to make sure your HVAC equipment operates as efficiently as possible throughout its’ life cycle. To this end we use the ACCA Standard 4 as the basis for our inspection lists.  According to ACCA, “There was no way to determine if the many types of “seasonal tune-ups”, “clean and checks”, and “maintenance services” performed on HVAC equipment were equivalent. ACCA developed this standard to provide a nationally-recognized, manufacturer-endorsed set of inspection tasks which would meet this need. This standard establishes the minimum tasks that should be performed for HVAC equipment maintenance inspections. From this base, consumers can compare the value of the additional recommended corrective actions which may be needed to remedy identified faults. For contractors, it provides a common platform for creating a maintenance program, while allowing for bundling different recommended corrective actions at different fee structures.” All of our plans cover inspecting and checking your HVAC equipment as part of a task list that you review when we are done. These checks are extensive, check out our Home Comfort Protection Plans page to go over each list for each type of equipment.

Do these savings seem too good to be true?

Here’s an example with made up numbers just to show the basic difference between not having a HCPP and how it pays for itself.  In this example we have a pretty standard Miami Valley customer with a thermostat, natural gas furnace, air conditioner, humidifier, media filter, and a made up repair equaling $650 that involved a leak in the lineset that was repaired. before any discount is applied that we do a heating and cooling check on in the course of a year. All prices listed are up to amounts.

Is this example a little extreme? Not if you follow the manufacturer recommendations for annual maintenance, Energy Star requirements for annual maintenance, and ACCA Standard 5 requirements for maintenance.  Not to mention the Purchase Accrual Program for Platinum and Gold HCPP. Up to $50 per year is earned by staying in the program and that money is used to help pay for a new system when it is time for a replacement system.

Remember that the Gold Plan gets another year of parts and labor warranty and same day service priority.

5 Reasons Why

5 Reasons why annual maintenance on your furnace makes sense and saves you money!

By | Maintenance

At Hauck Bros., Inc, we are in the business of customer service and building relationships with our clients. We focus on service over new sales because not every repair means it is time for a new furnace, heat pump, or air conditioner. According to Consumer Reports, with proper professional annual maintenance, furnaces typically last up to 18 years. We focus on those 18 years and how to make your furnace last as long as possible.  We want you to be comfortable, have a healthy indoor environment, and have your HVAC units operate as efficiently as possible.  Next month, we will go into more detail about our Home Comfort Protection Plans and the differences in each plan.  This month I will focus on why having annual maintenance makes financial and logical sense and what you can do as a homeowner or business to help maintain the lifespan of your HVAC equipment. From ACCA, Standard 4, “Conducting regularly scheduled inspections, maintenance, and remediation of HVAC systems prolongs equipment efficiency, promotes healthy clean air, supports lower utility costs, guards against unexpected failures, and prolongs equipment life. Occupants and the environment will both benefit.”

Yearly Maintenance Benefits in Detail

  1. Some manufacturers warranties require them to keep their warranty valid.
    • All manufacturers recommend annual inspections and maintenance be done by a qualified licensed professional. This is to ensure that their product is always at peak performance and to make sure only well-trained technicians are working on their product.  In short, with proper maintenance the manufacturer can guarantee their product for the life of the warranty.
  1. Having annual maintenance by the same servicer gives the client a history of each unit to rely on for recommendations and analysis.
    • At Hauck Bros. we keep records of your equipment history including maintenance and repair history for you as long as you are at your address. We use these histories to make recommendations on repairs and even replacements when the time comes for it. If you are selling your house, you can tell the new homeowner that Hauck Bros. has serviced your unit since you have had it and they have all the records of everything that has occurred with your HVAC system.
  1. Ensures your furnace maintains its peak efficiency.
    • When do some people call for service on their furnace? When they get a bill that is 2-3 times or more than their normal heating bill.  Having yearly maintenance on your furnace will ensure it is in peak condition and hopefully avoid costly wear and tear damage that may impact your furnace’s efficiency.
  1. Promotes healthy air.
    • Part of the annual maintenance is making sure to address parts of your HVAC system that affect indoor air quality.  The filter should be changed regularly, the blower wheel should be inspected, drains and traps should be cleaned, the intake and exhaust should be inspected, the indoor coil should be cleaned, should check for gas leaks. These are just some tasks that should be performed annually. They ensure your safety and ensure your system is operating in a way that improves the indoor air quality.
  1. Annual maintenance can prolong your furnace lifespan.
    • Minor problems are caught and repaired before they become big problems. Big problems can be caught before they become catastrophic problems. From the heat exchanger to control board to the filter, every aspect of your furnace is checked, tested, or inspected, this ensures there can be no doubt your furnace is in top shape for the upcoming heating season and for years to come.

What can you do yourself?

  • Make sure to inspect, clean, and/or change your air filters once a month
  • Listen to your system while it’s operating. If you hear unusual noises or vibrations, it might indicate a problem with your furnace
  • Smell. If you smell gas, call the gas company immediately.
  • Install alarms. Carbon Monoxide detectors are mandatory with fossil fuel furnaces. Install a water/freeze leak detector. This ensures if there is a backup of water or if it freezes you will be alerted immediately.
  • Make sure all supply and return ducts are obstacle free and clear of debris.
  • For fossil fuel furnaces, make sure the exhaust flue is clear of obstacles, debris, and nests.
  • Make sure to not store flammable objects around the furnace.
  • Make sure that only Licensed, Qualified, or if possible, Certified Professionals perform maintenance on your furnace.

How does having an annual maintenance agreement save me money?

  • With all of our Home Comfort Protection Plans, you receive a discount on any repairs.
  • With all of our plans there is never a charge for service call.
  • Our Gold and Platinum plans include the price of the filter once per year.
  • Our Gold and Platinum plans include the price of cleaning coils.
  • Our Gold and Platinum plans feature a Purchase Accrual credit that accrues each year. This Accrual is used towards the purchase of new equipment when the time comes.
  • By catching small problems before they become bigger problems, the repair costs by comparison would be lower.

At Hauck Bros., Inc. we feature Silver, Gold, and Platinum Home Comfort Protection Plans (HCPP), starting as low as $21 per month. Our Gold and Platinum HCPP meets Energy Star® Recommendations for annual service . Out Platinum HCPP meets ACCA, Standard 4 recommendations. Contact us via e-mailphone, or in person to learn more.

Air Conditioners

By | Air Conditioning

When properly installed, a central air conditioner can provide efficient cooling for your home or business. Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is the rating of the unit in terms of the cooling output during a typical cooling season divided by the total electrical energy input during that same period. In other words, the higher the rating, the more efficient the unit is and the more money you can save in utility bills. Air conditioners that are 16 SEER and above may be Energy Star Qualified and may qualify for rebates from your utility company.

Estimated Cooling Energy Saving, Based on 9 SEER 3 Ton Unit,
UnitNew Unit SEEREstimated Saving for 15 Years
Bryant® Legacy™13$2,300+
Bryant® Legacy™16$3,250+
Bryant® Preferred™17$3,500+
Bryant® Evolution®18$3,750+
Bryant® Evolution®20.5$4,100+

Saving energy not only helps keep your utility bills down, it also helps avoid costly upgrades and new buildings to produce energy. By not building new power plants, power lines, substations, and transformers, the cost of running electricity is kept lower for everyone. One of the biggest opportunities to save money is in making sure that when you are not at your home or business that you set the temperature to a higher setting. The easiest way to accomplish this it to have a programmable thermostat. If you have a normal schedule throughout the week, a programmable thermostat can be an easy answer to help you save money. A Wi-Fi thermostat give the additional benefit of being able to access on your smart device to easily adjust the temperature from almost anywhere.

Make sure to protect your equipment during the colder fall, winter and spring months with an air conditioning cover. We offer models made by Innerflow® for Bryant® equipment specifically designed to cover the air conditioner from top to bottom but still allows condensation to escape. These covers come with a ten-year warranty and protect your unit from debris, harsh weather, ultraviolet rays, ice, and rain.

Check out the Innerflow® system!
