How often should the media on my humidifier be
replaced?
At the beginning or end of each heating season for best performance. We have pads for most common brands on hand and we can special order the unusual pads as well. You can also include your humidifier, air cleaner, or UV lights in your service contract or Home Comfort Protection Plan for an additional charge and our service technician can change the media as needed when he performs your service check.
Can we retrofit a humidifier on an existing system, or do you have to put it in with your furnace?

Should my humidifier be connected to hot or cold water?
All humidifiers can be connected to hot or cold water, although there are some instances where it is necessary to supply hot water. For instance, on a system with a heat pump, or on a fan forced humidifier attached to a return air duct. This is because all humidifiers need a source of heat to evaporate the water. In other situations, while it isn’t absolutely necessary, it is helpful to use hot water for supply as it increases the efficiency and flexibility of the humidifier system. For example, in a large house where a humidifier operates at its highest capacity. Any humidifier system will benefit from hot water supply although it isn’t necessary on an average or smaller installation.
Where should I set the dial on my humidifier control to assure the proper humidity in my house?
Initially set the dial to 5 ( for an Aprilaire ) or at 35% for a Bryant or Honeywell brand humidifier. If you experience window fogging, or your house still seems too dry, turn it up or down by one increment say to 4 or 6, or 30% to 40%. Remember that it will take at least 24 hours for your house to stabilize at a set humidity, so allow plenty of time between changing the settings. If you need the owners manual for your humidifier, contact us and we can usually get them, if we have the make and model # of your humidifier.
New controls are available which will set your humidifier automatically using an outdoor temperature sensor. These are available for retrofit, provided it is practical to run the wire for the sensor outside. Both Bryant and Honeywell offer thermostats that integrate this function into your heating system so you only have one control to adjust. Ask our estimators or service technician about the availability of controls for your system.
